Alice Lenkiewicz
Artist Statement:
I would describe myself as a painter or Fine Artist. My medium
mainly involves the use of oils/acrylic on canvas. However, my medium
tends to change with the subject matter that I focus on at the time.I
sometimes work with sculpture and photography.I see my style as
visionary although I am also interested in creating works that are
from real life.
I have been practising as an artist since I was in my teens. My
father was a well known painter in the South West where I was brought
up. I was surrounded by paintings and studio life throughout my
childhood. My father taught me a great deal about art but I studied
a foundation as well as my degree in Art and Design with English
for my own interest.
Presently I prefer to concentrate on abstract compositions using
variations of tone and colour as well as incorporating the human
figure and landscape. I use photography as a way of exploring my
subject and as a social commentary, a way of engaging with my surroundings.
I like to see my work as a kind of poetry. I am a writer and a poet
and so both approaches tend to influence the other. Sometimes I
combine the spoken word with the visual through art performance
although I am primarily interested in visual art.
An example of artists that interest me are Cecil Collins, Howard
Hodgkin, Marc Chagal and Tracy Emmin. I also have a fascination
with Renaissance Italian and Dutch painters.
I completed my Foundation Regional Diploma in art and design at
Plymouth Art College when I left school. I then went on to do the
Open University A102 in art history. I studied my degree in Art
and Design and English at Edgehill in Ormskirk. My tutor at Edge
Hill encouraged me to make assemblages and collage. He also made
me think and enjoy sketching and gathering diaries and notes of
my work on a deeper level. This has always been an important part
of my work.
My father used to encourage me to focus on tone and form. Over
the years I have created my own visionary style which is still in
the process of changing and developing.
